Prof Jyotirmoy Das obtained B Sc and M Sc degrees in Physics from Calcutta University and Ph D in Biophysics from the Baylor College of Medicine (USA). This was followed by Post-doctoral research at Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (USA). He came back to India to join the Bose Institute in 1978, but soon moved to the  CSIR Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB) at Kolkata as head of the Biophysics Division in 1979. He rose to become its Director in 1995 and remained in this position till his passing away in July, 1998. His pioneering contributions in Vibrio cholerae research earned him many recognitions including fellowships of all the major academies of India. He worked on elucidation of genetics of cholera phages, physical and genetic maps of Vibro cholerae, repair processes and stress biology of Vibrio cholerae, publishing in world class journals. Recognizing the needs of the time, he also set up a division of human genome research at IICB.

Indian Society of Cell Biology instituted an endowment fund to initiate the Prof. Jyotirmoy Das Memorial Lecture series. The first award lecture  was delivered in 2001
