About Student Awards

In order to recognize and encourage the young cell biologists, the Indian Society of Cell Biology has instituted several awards for student participants who present their work (as short platform talks or as posters) at the annual AICB Conferences. Several of these wards have been instituted as endowment awards in memory of eminent cell biologists in recognition of their contributions.

The ISCB has instituted the following Awards:

1. ISCB – Dr B R Seshachar Memorial Prize – ONE for best platform presentation – Rs. 2000/-

2. ISCB – Dr. C.M.S.Dass Prize – ONE for best poster presentation – Rs. 2000/-

3. ISCB – Dr. S.R.V. Rao Prize – ONE for best poster presentation – Rs. 2000/- 

4. ISCB – Dr.V.C. Shah Prize – ONE for best poster presentation – Rs. 2000/-

5. ISCB – Dr A S Mukherjee Memorial Prize – ONE for best poster presentation – Rs 2000/-

6. ISCB – Dr. A.N.Bhisey Prize – ONE for best poster presentation – Rs. 2000/-

7. ISCB – Dr Manasi Ram Memorial Prize – ONE for best poster presentation – Rs 2000/- 

8. ISCB – Prize – for best poster presentation – Rs. 2000/-

The ISCB/AICBC organizers also may provide additional student awards at each annual conference.

Dr Bagepalli Ramachandra Seshachar

Dr B R Seshachar was Professor & Head of Department of Zoology, University of Mysore (Central College, Bangalore -1926-60) and Professor & Head of Department of Zoology, University of Delhi (1960-71); President , INSA (1971-72). His research interests were: i) cytology, gametogenesis and development of Apodan amphibians and ii) cytology, ultrastructure and DNA synthesis in some ciliates. He initiated the series of Cell Biology Conferences at the Centre of Advanced Studies in Zoology, Delhi University: beginning with 1965, these conferences were held every alternate years.

Dr Chunchinkatte Melkote Srinivas Dass

His research interest were: Cell Biology – Cellular Ultrastructure and Function, Silk Worm Pathology.He was closely associated with the Cell Biology Conferences at Delhi University since inception and had been one of the founder members of the Indian Society of Cell Biology with immense contribution.  He was the first Secretary of the society during 1977-78 and was the President of the society from 1983 to 1984.

Dr Salem Ramachandrarao Venkatasubba Rao

Dr S R V Rao was Reader and Professor of Zoology at Delhi University till 1992.  His research interests were: Cytogenetics and Cytotaxonomy of variety of mammals; cytological studies on dosage compensation in two species of crickets; constitutive heterochromatin in a rodent, Nesokia. He was closely associated with the Cell Biology Conferences at Delhi University since 1965 and had been one of the founder members of the Indian Society of
Cell Biology. He was Secretary of ISCB during 1979-80 and was President during 1989-90.

 Dr Vinodkant Chunilal Shah

Dr V C Shah was Reader, Department of Zoology till 1969 and then became Professor and Head of the Department of Zoology, Gujarat University. Later he served as Vice-Chancellor of Bhavnagar University of the M.S. University of Baroda.  His Research interests were: Cell Biology, Cytogenetics and radiation Biology. Was the first to develop a culture medium for amphibian cells. One of the pioneers to study effects of actinomycin and mitomycin on cells and chromosomes. Studied transcription and replication in chloroplasts of Euglena. He also ontributed to studies on leucoderma. Dr Shah was closely associated with establishment of the ISCB and was its Secretary during 1981-82 and President during 1987-88.

Dr Ardhendu Sekhar Mukherjee

Dr A S Mukherjee started his teaching career at Department of Zoology, University of Calcutta in 1965 from where he superannuated as professor; also served as Head of the Department. His research interests were: Developmental genetic studies on formation of bristle patterns in legs of Drosophila; pioneering contributions in development of hyperactive male X-chromosome model of dosage compensation and on replication in polytene chromosomes of Drosophila. Also studied role of repair system in fixation of mutations in Drosophila and on the role of hormones in carcinogenesis. He was associated with the ISCB since its inception and served as its Secretary during 1985-1986.

Dr Avinash Narayan Bhisey

Dr. Avinash Narayan Bhisey was the Head, Cell Biology Division (1985) and appointed as Director, Cancer Research Institute, Tata Memorial Centre (1995). Later, he was given the responsibility of coordinating the construction of and commissioning the Advance Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) as its Project Director. After retirement (2001) he was appointed as a Consultant, Bioinformatics Centre, University of Pune.His research Interest was mainly on Cell Biology, Cancer Cytogenetics and Animal Cell Culture. He was closely associated with the ISCB since its inception, served as its Secretary during 1987-88 and President during 1991-92.

Dr Mansi Ram

Dr Manasi Ram nee­ Ghosh was amongst the first few teachers to join the Botany Department of Miranda House. Her research work on Trapa, and Santalaceae is noteworthy and still referred to by the research community. She was a mother figure and her house was always open for the colleagues and students of Botany Department. She was a nature lover who enriched the Botanical Museum of Miranda House with various plant specimens collected from India and abroad. She was not only a dedicated teacher but also an avid reader of other science subjects. She passed away in 1996.
